Me: I stood up and opened my mouth to yell "That's a f**kin' bullsh** call you f**kin' idiot!" but I managed to restrain myself.
Evan: I thought you were going to say "Get off your knees, cos you're blowing the game".
So. My brother got kicked out of his first hockey game today on a f**king bullsh** call. It might as well have been called five minutes for hitting a girl, because that's what it came down to. He hit a girl and he got five minutes for, get this, checking to the head. Which comes with an automatic game misconduct. So he doesn't get to play tomorrow. And it was a clean hit. Just because she's a girl, he gets nailed for a bullshit penalty. When did it become a crime in hockey to hit another player? Who cares if it is a girl? It's a player, not a gender. It's Midget 'A' hockey. That means hitting is allowed. Hitting anyone is allowed. It doesn't matter if it's a girl. And what it came down to was she was a girl, he hit her, so he got a bullshit penalty. If anything, it could have been called two minutes for boarding. And it wasn't even the ref who called it--the linesman told him what to call, because it was mean to hit a girl. That's a comment that drifted up from the ice: "That was a mean thing to do." And so, five minutes and a game. There were even people waiting for him after the game wanting to fight him because he hit the girl. If it had been another guy player, they wouldn't have cared.
In an alternate reality, I actually did stand up and yell what I really thought. But in this one, I managed to be sportsmanlike. Fortunately, the game hadn't been called too badly up until then (7 minutes to go in the third) and we were winning 13-1. But tomorrow's game is supposed to be more competitive, and it might just be helpful to have a defenseman in that game. But whatever.
Oooh and here's a funny thing: five minutes into the game, the glass behind one of the nets got broken. They left the clock running while the rink guy went and cut a piece of plywood to replace the glass with. Because they didn't have a spare sheet of glass. Hurting.
